For Batungbacal, painting also served as a way of thinking, being, and remembering her experience of a place. In the first half of 2019, Batungbacal had her first taste of living in Madrid as part of her study abroad program. It was there that she felt enamored by the neighborhood of Malasaña, an area that she would often frequent and explore. Her return to the Philippines saw the creation of this piece as an ode to a beloved neighborhood that had left an indelible imprint on her.
