Following almost two years of enduring lockdown in the Philippines, Batungbacal’s return to Madrid in 2021 coincided with her reintegration back into “the new normal.” This signified a renewed sense of freedom and exploration within her, which drove her artistic focus towards discovering the most iconic landmarks of her new environment. However, she was fascinated with the idea of portraying them without the overwhelming crowds of tourists, in order to capture the pure, unadulterated essence of each space.
