Pink people in a cafe (2023)
Featured in:
“Lost in Translation”, Rosenblut & Friedmann, Madrid
Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s style of painting analogous, mask-like faces and his philosophy of “not being a portraitist, but a ‘Picasso-ist’, Batungbacal crafts her own rendition with pink people, under a similar manner and intent of reshaping the world through her own unique lens.
Her objective extends beyond mere aesthetics: she endeavors to strip away preferential features like skin tone and attire from her caricatures, symbolizing that beneath the layers of societal demarcations, a shared human connection prevails. This artistic direction also serves to celebrate the vibrant café culture she embraced upon moving to Europe.
