“Lost in Translation”, Rosenblut & Friedmann, Madrid
In early 2023, the Thyssen Museum in Madrid held an exhibit on Lucian Freud titled “New Perspectives.” Freud (1922-2011) was renowned both as a painter and as the grandson of psychologist Sigmund Freud. His distinct painting style embraced the use of distinguishable strokes and a subdued color palette. His subjects often stood exposed and shed of their societal veneers, or were quite literally painted in the nude.
Following her visit to this exhibition, Batungbacal was left in a rather contemplative mood. Later that same evening, while standing beneath the flow of water in her shower, she caught a glimpse of her own reflection and was again reminded of the brilliance of Freud’s works.
This is the Batungbacal’s only self-portrait painting.
