In 1973 former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos encouraged Filipinos to seek jobs abroad as a way to boost the economy. The individuals that did so were called balikbayans, which literally means “returning to the nation.” They were allowed to send personal goods back to their families, tax-free. These were typically packaged in cardboard boxes and became a source of connection to home.
